Religious Education Curriculum

St. Joseph's is a Catholic school centred on Jesus, in which faith is integrated with life. We are committed to the Catholic faith, recognising and valuing every individual as special and unique, made in the image of God. We see Religious Education (RE) as the core of our curriculum through which we develop each child's innate capacity for awe, wonder, reverence and spirituality. We believe that faith needs to be both formed and informed through education and example. In our school, we foster an ethos of love, truth, care and forgiveness so that children experience first-hand God’s message of love, and in turn pass it on to others. Our Gospel values of Humility, Compassion, Kindness, Justice, Forgiveness, Integrity, Peace and Courage permeate all aspects of school life and curriculum.

Our intent is to inspire our children, not to have more but to be more.  We equip our children with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore beliefs, values and traditions in the Catholic faith, and in other faiths. Our Religious Education curriculum is planned and delivered using the 'Diocesan RED planning'. Children are taught about God's love; they learn about Christian responsibilities and are provided with experiences of Church and Catholic traditions, as well as being taught to be respectful and understanding of people and traditions from other faith backgrounds.

The outcome of excellent Religious Education is religiously literate and engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills – appropriate to their age and capacity – to reflect spiritually, and think ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.

RHE
As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the spiritual, social and cultural development of all our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church. The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and a privileged responsibility. The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the 'first educators' of their children on these matters. We teach Relationships and Health Education using Ten Ten's programme for Catholic primary schools: Life to the Full. The framework for the programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.
